Melissa Ettinger has had a pivotal, positive impact on our son and, consequently, our entire family.
Just as we were coming out of Covid and moving to a new town, we discovered that my son – who was starting first grade – was experiencing significant learning disabilities and behavioral challenges. We were informed that he was already behind grade-level reading and the gap was widening rapidly. He was having trouble making friends and he was having challenges meeting basic expectations.
Coming from a school where we were told more than once that “we had nothing to worry about,” my husband and I were distressed. We were worried, overwhelmed; we felt blind and alone.
We poured time, love and resources into our son’s education and well-being, but it didn’t seem to be making a difference. The gaps were widening. We were starting to wonder what kind of future our son could have. Then we met Melissa Ettinger.
It’s been a journey, but after much hard work with Melissa, our son is finally closing the gaps. He finished this past school year reading at grade level and is even excelling at math and other subjects.
I think that my son has been so successful with Melissa because she sees and understands him in a way that a parent can only hope for. He has quirky, hyper-focused interests; he is a gatherer of information and loves to learn. But despite his love for knowledge, our son was very resistant to reading, because it made him feel badly about himself and his abilities. So, Melissa would find and gift him books that he couldn’t resist: Books about dinosaurs, Star Wars—whatever would capture his interest.
Melissa always met our son where he was: Giving him moments to take a break to help him refocus; giving him the safe space to share how he felt his brain was functioning, so that they could work on overcoming his challenges together. I have learned so much about my own child and his experience through his relationship with Melissa.
And not only has his work with Melissa given our son a solid foundation to overcome his academic challenges: It has also given him confidence and skills to navigate social issues and daily expectations. Through what my son calls “Brain Games” — his favorite activity— he’s learned fundamental tools, such as active listening, flexibility and organization. The results speak for themselves: He’s more independent and proactive. He also has more friends.
Melissa has had such a profound impact on our son—she's changed the trajectory of his life. While we will always need to put in the work, we no longer feel alone, and we can see what is possible. Thanks to Melissa Ettinger, the future looks bright.

My almost 12-year-old daughter, Samantha, has been working with Melissa Ettinger since June 2024. One of the main reasons I truly appreciate Ms. Ettinger is that she took the time to really get to know my daughter, which helped Samantha warm up to her quickly. Samantha loves working with Ms. Ettinger so much that she even pretends to tutor her friends with the same warmth and care that Ms. Ettinger shows her.
When I first met Ms. Ettinger, she took the time to ask both Samantha and I about her about strengths and challenges at both school and home. I appreciated this thoughtful approach—it showed she values the home-school connection and understands the importance of seeing the whole child. She continues to check in regularly with both Samantha and me to stay updated on how things are going in both settings.
I shared her IEP goals, and Ms. Ettinger continues to thoughtfully incorporate those goals into each tutoring session. Another reason I value Ms. Ettinger so much is her deep knowledge of special education—she supported me through a difficult PPT process with the school district, helping me prepare questions for each meeting and reviewing the documents to ensure Samantha’s needs were addressed.
In addition, Ms. Ettinger creates engaging activities that target Samantha’s executive functioning skills and reading comprehension weaknesses, always keeping her attention and interests in mind. Since Samantha has ADHD and is mildly on the spectrum, Ms. Ettinger includes brain breaks to help her refocus when needed. I love seeing Samantha use these strategies when reading with me at home.
I look forward to watching Samantha continue to grow with Ms. Ettinger’s support. I give Ms. Ettinger 5 stars—plus!

My son began working with Ms. Ettinger at the beginning of first grade. When he came to her he was struggling in reading and was so frustrated that he dreaded school. Very soon after working with Ms. Ettinger, we saw immediate improvements. Reading and spelling started to click for our son and the most important thing of all happened - his confidence grew and he knew he was becoming a reader. He no longer dreaded school but looked forward to his time with her and developed self-confidence and pride through their work together.

Melissa has been working with my two boys for several years (now ages 9 and 7), focusing primarily on reading and writing. She uses a variety of multisensory strategies and methodologies to build their reading skills. She is caring, compassionate, and capable of connecting with both my boys at their level of understanding. With her strong knowledge and experience in reading, she has been able to motivate and instruct both boys using the reading, writing, and spelling strategies that work best for each of them. She has helped to build their independence and confidence and has fostered a love for learning in each of them.
Additionally, Melissa has been a valuable source of support and guidance as I navigated the world of special education. It is worth mentioning that Melissa is flexible, accommodating, and easy to schedule with. Both my boys truly enjoy working with Melissa and I would highly recommend her."

Ms. Ettinger began tutoring my son before his Dyslexia diagnosis and as she tutored him she modified her methods of teaching to meet his needs. Ms. Ettinger was always prepared to teach and pivot if there was a teachable moment outside of the planned activity. She brought games and would play with my son and he didn’t realize he was learning. Throughout the time my son has worked with Ms. Ettinger he has gained confidence, learned strategies, and has built trusting friendships with his tutor. He looks forward to seeing her and I do too!

Ms. Ettinger began working with my daughter when she was in the middle of first grade. At that time, my daughter was quickly falling behind in both reading and writing compared to her peers. Ms. Ettinger used her expertise as a reading teacher to find the strategies and approaches that worked best for my daughter's learning profile. My daughter made significant improvements in both her reading and writing while working with Ms. Ettinger.
In addition, Ms. Ettinger was very thorough and took the time to explain her work with my daughter to me so that I could understand what was happening. Ms. Ettinger created a structure and environment that always kept my daughter motivated. My daughter always looked forward to seeing Ms. Ettinger for her next session. Ms. Ettinger is a very patient, caring tutor. I highly recommend her for any reading and writing support your child may need.

Melissa worked with my son the summer between kindergarten and 1st grade after kindergarten remote learning. She made learning sessions fun for him and set him up for a successful year of learning in 1st grade! I highly recommend her for literacy tutoring in early elementary grades!
